Design is Just Conversation

Design is Just Conversation

People think design is about colors, grids, patterns, or whatever fancy trend is trending this week. But really, it’s just… talking.

Every little piece of an interface is part of a conversation.
A button says: “Click me, I’ll take you somewhere.”
A form says: “Tell me about yourself, but don’t lie about your email.”
An error message says: “Oops, my bad. Let’s pretend that didn’t happen.”

Good design is basically good small talk. It’s friendly, clear, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Bad design? That’s the friend who talks too much, interrupts you constantly, or whispers nonsense like a broken robot… Exhausting.

The best interfaces don’t shout at you in all caps. They don’t try to impress you with 27 buttons when you only need one. They don’t flex with animations that look like fireworks. They just… talk. Calmly. Clearly. Like someone you’d actually want to sit next to at a dinner party.

Here’s the thing: people remember conversations. They don’t remember perfect pixels. Nobody has ever said, “Wow, those margins were so beautifully balanced.” But they will remember how your design spoke to them. Did it make sense? Did it make them smile? Did it help them, without being annoying? That’s the real test.

So when I design, I don’t obsess over whether a shadow is at 20% or 22%. I ask: “What is this saying? Would I say it to a friend? Or does it sound like I swallowed a UX textbook?”

Because at the end of the day, design isn’t pixels. It’s people talking to people. And if your design is rude, loud, or confusing… well, congratulations _ you’ve just built the UI equivalent of that one uncle who won’t stop explaining Bitcoin at Christmas dinner.

Be the good friend instead. Be the interface people actually want to talk to. That’s all design really is. A conversation worth having.
